A very interesting article on "how to change brake fluid" was published on 16 October 2007 in the Westdeutschen Allgemeinen Zeitung (WAZ):
Brake fluid - Periodic checks for your safety
Hanover (dpa/tmn) -
When braking a car, the pedal force in the car is transmitted to the brake cylinders by the brake fluid. Its effect is that the brake pads are pressed onto the brake discs and the vehicle is slowed down, as explained by the Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV Nord) in Hanover.
One problem of the brake fluid is its hydroscopic nature: It means that it absorbs water from the ambient air - which reduces its boiling point with increasing age. Therefore, it is highly recommendable to exchange it on a regular basis according to the prescriptions of the car manufacturer.
This is important in the context of the fact that during braking frictional heat is released - even up to 600° C. A part of this heat is transmitted to the brake fluid. Longer descents in the mountains, or short braking sequences started at higher velocities may generate temperatures over 160 ° C in the brake fluid, according to the Technical Inspection Agency. If the boiling point is exceeded, vapour bubbles are formed - and as a result it may become impossible to build up braking pressure with the brake pedal. This is tantamount to a failure of the brake system. Drivers should have the boiling temperature of the brake fluid checked on a regular basis. It must under no circumstances fall below 180 ° C.
